Hōkūleʻa Lands in Keauhou Bay, Crew Holds Talk-Story Session at OKR
OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa (OKR) Hosts Hōkūleʻa
Crew of Legendary Polynesian Voyaging Canoe Holds Captivating “Talk-Story” Event
BY POLANI MO’OKINI – More than a voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa is a symbol of cultural resilience, crafted as a replica of ancient Polynesian vessels. Since her first voyage in 1975, Hōkūleʻa has represented the revival of indigenous knowledge, navigating by stars, ocean swells, and nature alone. Her journeys inspire a collective commitment to safeguarding our natural and cultural heritage for future generations. Hōkūleʻa’s presence reminds us that by connecting with tradition, we create new paths toward a sustainable future.
On Wednesday, November 6, the team at OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa invited the public to a captivating “talk-story” event with the crew of Hōkūleʻa, the legendary Polynesian voyaging canoe, under the stars at the resort’s Manta Viewing Deck. As part of the Pae‘āina Statewide Sail, the free event offered a rare opportunity to engage with expert navigators and learn about the powerful legacy of Hōkūleʻa, which has reignited the art of wayfinding and sparked a Hawaiian cultural renaissance.
It was surreal to see several ‘ohana wa‘a legends on stage in front of Keauhou Bay, and I know it meant a lot for them to gather together in a beautiful “and dry!” space. The audience included luminaries such as Nathalie Carisey, the President of Kona Brewing Hawai’i and several Native Hawaiian community leaders all the way from Waimea and North Kona. Having people of such great influence from the Polynesian Voyaging Society like Pomai Bertleman and Chad Paishon on property was really special, providing a unique chance to hear first-hand from Hōkūleʻa’s crew about their mission to preserve traditional navigation, share Hawaiian values, and inspire communities to protect our oceans and island earth.
