TRAINING + DEVELOPMENT

Castaway Island, Fiji (FCI)

Yoga Training at FCI

BY KOLINIO VULAONO – Embarking on a six-day introductory yoga training was a transformative experience for all six participants, most of whom were stepping onto the mat for the very first time. The journey was not just about learning yoga poses but also about discovering a deeper connection with ourselves and each other.

The whole purpose of the training is to serve as a refresher to those who have been practicing yoga, while also aiming to enhance the guest experience in the resort. Part of the training were five hosts from the activities department and one host from the Spa Department. The whole experience was achieved by the guidance and training of Sam Buckingham who was specifically invited to conduct the Yoga Training. Sam is a working TV Presenter, voiceover artist and speaking coach. She is from Australia and is a certified yoga instructor with a passion for wellness and a love for nature.

The first day was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. As beginners, we were introduced to the basics of yoga, including foundational poses and breathing techniques. The gentle guidance of our instructor helped ease us into practice, making us feel comfortable and welcomed. As the day progressed, we started to build confidence in our abilities. We learned to synchronize our breath with movement, which brought a sense of calm and focus. The supportive environment allowed us to push our boundaries and explore new poses, gradually building our strength and flexibility.

Midway through the training, we faced some challenges. Holding poses for longer periods tested our endurance, but also taught us the importance of patience and perseverance. Engagement from our peers and instructor kept us motivated, and we began to see improvements in our practice. By the fifth day, we started to find balance between effort and relaxation. The practice of mindfulness and meditation became an integral part of our routine, helping us to stay present and centered. This balance extended beyond the mat, influencing our daily lives and interactions.

The final day was a celebration of our journey. We reflected on how far we had come in just six days. It was more than just a course; it was a journey of self-discovery and growth. For many of us, it was the first step towards a lifelong practice. Yoga has the power to heal and transform a person.

OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel

Fire Prevention/Fire Extinguisher training

BY CHRISTOPHER PINO – On November 7 we held a Fire Prevention/Fire Extinguisher training session at the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel. The training was conducted by the Honolulu Fire Department and helpful for several reasons.

Foremost, proper training ensures everyone knows how to react in an emergency, including knowing where the evacuation routes are and how to use fire extinguishers. Knowing how to use fire extinguishers can also prevent small fire fires from escalating, thereby reducing potential damage to the property.

Mahalo to all the hosts who took part in the training. By doing so, you help us create a culture of safety. As Fire Inspector Thomas Inouye mentioned, if your property is interested in this training for your hosts, please click on this link: Requests for Information | Honolulu Fire Department. I encourage all properties to take advantage of this free training for you and your team.
