More OUTstanding OZONE Efforts!

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

BY ASHNEEL CHAND — Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort activities and Meimei teams, along with the support of the Outrigger management team and hosts, participated in a number of events throughout June – World Ocean Month.

The team cleaned up the beach foreshore with participation from management and also our guests, collecting 67 kilos (148 lbs) of rubbish in just one hour!

We collaborated with the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual & Cultural Advancement (OSICA) and Korotogo Village and planted 400 mangrove seedlings at the Korotogo beach area as part of the coastal erosion eradication and mangrove regeneration project. The project included 30 students from OSICA, the Korotogo youth group and the management team of the resort. The event was well received and appreciated by the community and the Department of Environment Fiji Islands.

Extra emphasis was placed on the ongoing coral planting and regeneration initiative by Outrigger with the activity undertaken by guests and the management team. In June alone, the team planted 142 coral cones, sank 16 fish houses and removed 44 crown of thorns from the lagoon.

A few items were on sale over the month with proceeds redirected towards the ongoing efforts of ocean programs. We collected $864 FJD ($387 USD) in June through the sale of Wai Tui Blues cocktails and artwork that will go to the community to help continue coral planting efforts.
